to do a budget. harry reid and patty she said i'm the chairman of the committee and the jimmy buffet song, if the phone doesn't ring, it must be me. waiting-- >> one of the observations i had today and i thought my colleague charles krauthammer had a good point. obama laid down the gauntlet gave the most liberal partisan speech i can think of in our lifetime. now, and almost he wants to destroy or wipe out the reagan legacy or reaganism with massive big government, social engineering. do you think he'll be successful in this term accomplishing that? >> well, that's our job in the house, to stop this. and think about sort of the outrageous language in the president's speech today. when he wants it talk about social justice, well, darn it, a job is the ultimate social justice. and yet, the policies of this administration have crushed the ability to expand this, this economy. so, how do we now in the house start to use what leverage points we have to force the senate to finally engage in the process of doing what's right? and mr. waldon and i talked about it in the past i think the sena

's time for the senate to lead. on climate change, let harry reid to see if they can do something. it's their turn. let the senate pass a budget. on guns, i'd be interested to see if they can pass a an obama-style coalition to do what the president is asking for. that's a big change. the house, one of the things they need to do smarter is not see a plank and swim with sharks. let harry reid lead and see what they can do. i think the president will have a lot fewer followers than he thinks. >> harry reid is as able senate leader. i love seeing him lead. it's interesting that ari is counseling at least on tv counseling republicans not to lead. look, that's easy for the republicans. they used to say -- ari and i are both baseball fans. the house controlled by the republicans are where good ideas go to die and that's apparently what speaker boehner is being advised to do now. i think it's a terrible mistake. he could come and make deals and meet the president halfway but it looks like i think they are going to go back to their constructionism. that's not a good strategy. >> all right. we'

every year. nobody would expect to be paid if they didn't do their job. no budget, no pay. if harry reid cannot pass a budget, they are fundamentally moving the responsibility why they should even be in the majority. to me, this is a turning point for this country, getting to the fundamentals of a planning for the future that this could be the mark of a great american comeback. >> good evening. yesterday, the president was inaugurated and he took a similar -- he took an oath of office that is very similar to the one that we take as members of congress, to uphold the constitution and to protect this country. and it starts with getting a budget in place. that is pretty fundamental to governing and the federal government is operating right now with a continuing resolution. and we need a budget in place. we need a senate to pass the budget. it's going on four years since the senate has passed the budget. the senate has said his budget is going to be delayed. america, families understand they need to pass a budget. you may not want to do it, but you have to figure out how to balance the budge

just mentioned, martha, it has been almost four years since harry reid and the democrats have passed a budget. i think there is a larger point here. everybody in washington, especially the democrats, are celebrating the republicans blinked here and there is no question they blinked in the showdown with the president and are giving him another three-month debt extension. you know the real problem and i just want to make this point, the problem isn't whether we are going to have a debt limit showdown, the problem is that we are borrowing $16.4 trillion. all we are doing here, martha to be realistic about it is we are saying, coach doing what you're doing, we are going to keep borrowing at the same pace. this is not a solution. martha: matt, i look at this i feel like every time there is a so-called deadline we all know that the deadlines are so squishy and congress always figures out some way not to have to feel with the deadline and live in the real world and get the work done. i think people are sick to death of this. >> we've almost become numb to it i think. last year when this was
